Good Humour Club member Ward was the proprietor of the York Courant. After Caesar’s death in 1759, his widow Ann Ward took over the printing business and the newspaper. She published the first two volumes of Laurence Sterne’s novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman in December 1759.
